Musk pledges accelerated chip equipment delivery for Texas Terafab megaproject

Tesla and SpaceX aim for volume chip production in Texas by late 2028, relying on expedited shipments from ASML and other global suppliers to meet aggressive targets.

For residents of Texas and observers of the semiconductor sector, the pace of construction and technology deployment is set to accelerate. Elon Musk announced on October 20 that key equipment suppliers, including ASML, are moving shipments forward to support the Terafab facility. This joint venture between Tesla and SpaceX is targeting the start of volume chip production by the third or fourth quarter of 2028. While Musk described this schedule as "highly aspirational" with "big error bars," the commitment to earlier delivery signals a push to compress a multi-year manufacturing timeline.

During a live broadcast of SpaceX’s third-quarter earnings call on X, Musk highlighted the collaborative nature of the project. He stated that the companies are "very appreciative" of ASML and other suppliers for accelerating equipment deliveries to help achieve the outcome. The primary production site is located in Gibbons Creek, Texas, while an experimental test chip is expected to be manufactured at a research fabrication facility in Austin around the second quarter of 2027. This dual-site approach allows for initial research and development before scaling up to the main industrial output.

The Terafab project is designed as a vertically integrated factory capable of producing logic, memory, and advanced packaging in a single location. Its ultimate goal is to generate one terawatt of AI computing power annually. To achieve this, the facility will utilize extreme ultraviolet lithography systems based on Intel’s 14A manufacturing node. Intel joined the venture in April 2026 to co-develop and refactor silicon fabrication technology, providing access to this state-of-the-art process. ASML remains the most critical partner as the sole commercial supplier of the $400 million EUV lithography systems required for leading-edge chip production.

Beyond the lithography tools, the project involves a complex web of supplier agreements. American firms Applied Materials, Lam Research, and KLA Corporation, along with Japan’s Tokyo Electron, will provide front-end processing, metrology, and process control machinery. Additionally, Tesla and SpaceX are in negotiations with approximately ten South Korean equipment manufacturers, including Hanmi Semiconductor and HPSP, for advanced packaging and high-pressure hydrogen annealing equipment. Despite these efforts, the first EUV tool was reportedly slated for delivery in mid-2027, though it remains unclear if this matches the expedited timeline Musk referenced.

Musk also outlined broader computing capacity goals during the broadcast, stating he is highly confident in bringing 13 gigawatts of AI compute online by the end of 2027. This includes a 440,000-GPU Nvidia "Vera Rubin" training cluster planned for the second quarter of 2027. The chips produced at Terafab will serve multiple applications, including xAI clusters, self-driving vehicles, Optimus humanoid robots, and SpaceX’s orbital AI data center. However, experts have questioned the feasibility of the one-terawatt ambition. Research firm Gartner estimates total global AI-optimized data center capacity at roughly 44 gigawatts as of late 2026, making Terafab’s planned output a significant leap in scale.

The project aims to mitigate future shortfalls in cutting-edge AI processors by reducing reliance on external foundries like TSMC. If fully operational, Musk suggested the commercial value of Terafab’s output could rival the GDP of the 20th-largest economy in the world, currently Switzerland with an approximate GDP of $1.14 trillion. While the timeline carries significant risk, the expedited supply chain engagements indicate a firm commitment to bringing this massive infrastructure project to fruition in the late 2020s.
